An update from West Lothian Council - concerning Abercorn Churchyard
they have recently inspected the headstones stability as required by the Scottish Government.
After this recent inspection, approx. 16 large headstones ranging from 1.2-2.4 meters in height had to be laid down in the interests of public safety as they failed the topple test and were quite unstable.
To reinstate these headstones in a safe condition, we now need to replace foundations. The new foundations would normally be approx.18 inches in depth (450mm). As this is in a very old churchyard there is a higher risk of remains being exposed given the shallow depths of the graves and subsidence caused by the weight of the historical stones. They do not wish to undertake any intrusive works which could cause any distress to those that use the church or churchyard, or the families of any of the deceased. Unfortunately, there is no specific legislation or precise guidance for the reinterment of exposed bones or bone fragments in a cemetery in Scotland. As such, they have sought guidance from Scottish Government and the Scottish Burial Bereavement Group.
They propose therefore to cater for this in the following ways
- To restrict the foundation depth (below ground) to 300mm
- to remove no spoil from the Cemetery
- to fence and screen off areas where works are being undertaken
- to erect signage advising on the headstone works.
This work is likely to be undertaken in late 2026.
